Our correspondent, Pabna
Awami League (AL) activists forced to halt the recruitment examination for the deputy commissioner's (DC) office yesterday morning. Leaders and activists of the ruling party and its associate bodies vandalised vehicles of the administration and assaulted the staffs during the attack. The authorities has postponed the examination for 17 posts under four categories until further notice said official sources. Some BCL leaders claimed that agitating people carried out the attacks as the examination papers were leaked earlier. Pabna deputy commissioner's office sources said the examinations started at 9:00am at two centres--Pabna Zila School and Pabna Government Girls High School. Imam Uddin Kabir, additional deputy commissioner (ADC, Revenue) in Pabna, told The Daily Star that leaders and activists of the ruling party including Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League entered the examination centres and forced to halt the examination. Activists also vandalised at least five vehicles, including the official vehicle of Rajshahi divisional commissioner's office, additional district magistrate, additional deputy commissioner and Pabna sadar thana nirbahi officer (TNO). The attackers also assaulted the officials during this time. They snatched the examination papers and admit cards from the examinees and burnt them in the examination centre, the ADC added. The district administration has lodged two cases with the sadar thana against 30 to 32 people including BCL Pabna district unit President Ahmed Sharif Dablu and its former president Mostafizur Rahman Sweet. When contacted, AL lawmaker Golam Faruk Khandaker denied involvement of the party activists saying agitating locals committed the acts. Contacted, Ahmed Sharif also denied allegations saying angry locals made the attack as authorities already selected people for the posts. He also alleged that question papers for the examination were leaked out three days ago. Pabna Deputy Commissioner AFM Monjur Kadir refuted the allegation of the BCL men saying there is no scope to leak out the question paper. “The recruitment examination is controlled by the divisional commissioner's office. We do not know about the question so there is no scope to leak out question from the district,” the DC said. Monir Hossain, director of local government department of Rajshahi division, said the recruitment examination was postponed due to the situation. Higher authority will select a new time and date for the examination, he added. Abu Ishhaque Shamim, joint secretary of Pabna district unit AL said the party and its associates are not involved with the incident.
