Wait till next polls for mandate
Ashraful urges BNP
Ruling Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam urged opposition BNP to wait till the next general election to seek the people's mandate and return to parliament
instead of launching movement.
“It is the constitutional right to wage movement but it will be unconstitutional to launch oust-government movement even one day before the completion of the government's tenure,” he told reporters after an emergency meeting of the party presidium at Ganobhaban yesterday evening.
Ashraful said everyone knows about the consequence of violating the Constitution following the High Court verdicts that scrapped the 5th and the 7th amendments to the Constitution.
He said the opposition should return to parliament and point out the government's failures in running the affairs of the country.
Besides, he said following the High Court's verdicts, the Constitution will have to be amended and “we want to amend the Constitution through joint efforts of the ruling and the opposition parties,” he said.
Asked if the presidium discussed about Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon MP's alleged involvement in Ibrahim murder case, Ashraful declined to comment on it as inquiry into the matter is on.
The presidium meeting chaired by Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina began at 7pm and continued through 9pm.
Ashraful said the presidium expressed satisfaction over stable prices of essentials, law and order situation and electricity supply during the Ramadan and the eid-ul-fitr.
He said a fear that was created in the public minds proved wrong.
About the trial of 1971 war criminals, Ashraful also the LGRD Minister said the presidium expressed satisfaction over the process of trial and hoped that the trial would be completed within the stipulated time.
