United efforts a must to achieve MDG
Speakers tell seminar
Speakers at a seminar yesterday stressed the need for united efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) within the stipulated timeframe, as the MDGs cannot be achieved only by the government or a single organisation.
They said people's representation should be ensured strengthening the local government to implement the goals.
Governance Coalition, an NGO, organised the seminar on "MDGs 2015 and Local Government" at Cirdap conference hall with Chairman of Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad in the chair.
Among others, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission Dr Mizanur Rahman, Advocate Sanjida Khanom, MP, Anisul Islam Mondol, MP also addressed the seminar as special guests.
Mizanur Rahman stressed for ensuring proper distribution of wealth and resources among the general people to establish a disparity and poverty free society.
He said the MDGs is not a charity, it should be seen as human rights.
Without strengthening the local government, the participation of the people won't be established and without their participation the MDGs won't be achieved, he said.
Qazi Kholiquzzaman said discrimination and corruptions were hampering the progress of the country.
He said equal opportunities should be created for all. The government is also trying to create equal opportunities for all. The new education policy is one of the instance of the government's steps in this regard.
Advocate Sanjida Khanom said Bangladesh has made commendable progress on many social goals comparing to many other countries in South Asia and also many of the least developed countries in the world.
Particularly in education enrollment, reducing child mortality, reducing poverty and hunger, more parity between girls and boys despite the disasters and climate challenges and economic crisis, she said.
Coordinator of Governance Coalition Mohsin Ali moderated the seminar while its national project coordinator Akmat Ali Mia presented the keynote paper.
