Some activists of the Safe Waterway Implementation Movement yesterday demanded of the government to stop plying of faulty and risky vessels immediately to ensure safe travel in waterways. They also demanded enlisting of unfit and risky vessels and making the list public. They placed the demand at a press conference on 'Government's mismanagement responsible for unsafe riverine transport sector' at the Naitonal Press club in the city yesterday. Although the government and responsible agencies repeatedly have announced to impose strict restriction on plying overloaded and unfit launches, they have failed to keep a strong vigil in this regard, they said. They alleged that indifference of the government officials and tendency of securing much profit of the launch owners are responsible for riverine accidents. Other demands include registering name and address of passengers before riding on the vessels, cancellation of rotation system, ensuring strong monitoring on plying overloaded vessels, stopping carrying passengers on rooftop and hatches, keeping lifejacket and buoy in every vessel and deploying sufficient number of law enforcers. Safe Waterway Implementation Movement member secretary Aminur Rashul Babul and joint member secretary Jibanananda Jayanta, among others, were present at the press conference.
