Ensure hassle-free migration

Speakers at a workshop here yesterday emphasised proper coordination among concerned ministries and government and private recruiting agencies for appropriate, hassle-free, easy and transparent management of migration. They also underscored the need for making recruiting agencies and offices of relevant government agencies in Chittagong more effective to facilitate the people eager for overseas jobs. They were speaking at a workshop titled “Migration management for recruitment agencies” at a local hotel. International Organisation for Migration (IOM) organised the workshop in association with European Commission and Bangladesh Association of International Agencies (Baira). Deputy Commissioner (DC) Faiz Ahmed was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the workshop with Baira Secretary General Ali Haider Chowdhury as the special guest. IOM National Programme Officer Asif Munier presented keynote papers on "Challenges and ethical issues in the migration process" and "Good practices in recruitment from the region". Faiz said a properly managed migration system is needed for the expansion of overseas employment for Bangladeshi nationals to strengthen national economy. He urged the local recruiting agencies to carry out their business with more sincerity to reduce sufferings of the migrants. He also emphasised on broad discussion for participation of more local recruiting agencies, NGO workers and representative relevant government agencies to specify challenges and solutions in Chittagong. Haider emphasised on raising awareness among people in rural level on migration process. He proposed for setting up information centres in union level with internet facilities so that rural people can access information on overseas jobs and migration processes easily. Speakers also urged for increasing manpower in Bangladeshi embassies in different countries to provide legal support and facilities to migrant workers facing difficulties there. Group discussion on topics like "Framework for ethical codes of conduct in recruitment practices" and "Lowering the migration cost" were held moderated by Asif and Shafiqur Rahman Khan of Empowerment through Law of the Common People (ELCOP).
