BNP high-ups sit today
May discuss JS joining, agitation
BNP Standing Committee, the highest policymaking body of the party, meets at Chairperson Khaleda Zia's office today.
None of its members was, however, aware of the agenda as of filing this report at 9:00pm.
Party insiders said expansion of the four-party alliance and agitation programmes might get priority.
The issue of deciding whether to parliament might be put on back burner, as some influential leaders want to continue boycotting the House, they added.
Earlier on Saturday, BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain said his party would discuss the issue at today's meeting.
Committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy last night told The Daily Star he did not yet know anything about the meeting agenda. “I will try to give my opinion on whatever might be the issue,” he said.
Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, an influential leader of the party, said he too was not informed about the meeting agenda, but he hopes the parliament issue will come up for discussion.
Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said, “The chairperson earlier said anti-government agitation programmes would be announced after Eid, and I think this will be a topic for discussion tomorrow.”
Sources in the party said a few senior and mid-level leaders are trying to press the party high-ups to announce agitation programmes. “A road march or long march towards Sylhet or Chittagong may be finalised at the meeting,” said a central leader of the party.
