The first day of admission form distribution at Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College turned disorderly when more than 5,000 students could not collect forms even after waiting several hours yesterday. All the 5,000 forms given by the health directorate were sold out within three hours and the students who could not get the form agitated and created a chaotic situation. Additional police were deployed on the college premises to handle the situation. Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Reaz Hossain said, since all forms were sold out by10:00am, more than 5,000 students were asked to collect forms from other public medical colleges, which created chaos. When asked on limiting forms to only 5000 at the medical colleges, the authorities of the health directorate said that it was done for a fair admission system. "If the ceiling was not fixed, then perhaps more than 20,000 students would take the form from Dhaka Medical College, whereas Rangpur Medical College would not be able to sell even 2,000 forms,” said Khandaker M Shefayet Ullah, director (medical education) of Directorate General of Health Services. Furthermore, the medical colleges have less than 120 teachers, and it is not possible for those teachers to keep vigil on the 20,000 students during the admission test," he said. "As the examination will be held under a unified system with the same question paper and on the same date, the students can collect the form from any of the 17 public hospitals across the country," he said. The form distribution for MBBS Admission Course (2010-2011) will continue till 7th October.
