Speaker blames DCC for not installing speed bumps

Speaker Abdul Hamid yesterday came down hard on the Dhaka City Corporation for not installing speed bumps on the Manik Mia Avenue to ensure lawmakers' safe passage from the MP hostel to the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. "I called the chief engineer of the city corporation four days before the parliament session and requested him to construct speed bumps on the avenue. But nothing has been done yet," Hamid said in response to a comment of Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan in the House. Taking floor, the shipping minister said he narrowly escaped an accident yesterday after leaving the MP hostel for the parliament building. The driver of a speeding car managed to put on the brakes just in time avoiding a collision with his car, the minister said. In response, Hamid said, "I find no reason for not constructing speed bumps on the avenue. Accidents had happened there."
