EC plans to bear poll cost of parties

The Election Commission is actively considering preparing a legal framework for allocating money to registered political parties to meet their expenditure in the next parliamentary election. Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad, also in charge of the EC Secretariat in parliamentary business, told the House yesterday while replying to lawmakers' queries. He said the existing law does not allow allocating money to the political parties for poll expense. The minister also said the EC has planned to hold the long due polls to Dhaka City Corporation on urgent basis, and has completed all preparations in this regard. On Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda said the EC has planned to hold the DCC polls by December. Meanwhile, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam in question time said elections to all municipalities and union parishads will take place by December.
