Pilkhana Carnage
2 cases shifted to Sessions Judge's Court
A Dhaka court yesterday shifted two cases filed in connection with the Pilkhana carnage to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court for trial.
Metropolitan Magistrate AGM Al Masud scrutinised the documents of the cases and transferred those to the court as his court is not authorised to try such offences brought against the accused.
The court also rejected bail petitions of 12 BDR jawans in connection with the case filed for killing BDR officials and others.
The cases were filed for killing; and possessing firearms, ammunition and explosives during the mutiny at BDR's Pilkhana headquarters on February 25-26 last year.
Officer-in-Charge of Lalbagh Police Station Nobajyoti Khisha filed a case in this connection after the BDR mutiny and later the case was shifted to New Market Police Station in April the same year as the place of occurrence was under the territory of the police station.
Later, the two cases -- one for killing and another under Explosives substances Act -- were filed in this connection.
On July 12, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) indicted 824 BDR soldiers and civilians in the killing case for 24 criminal charges including murder, arson, looting, hiding of bodies, and sedition during the mutiny.
Of them, 21 BDR jawans have been absconding since the case was filed. Following the plea of CID, the court had earlier issued arrest warrants against them and an order to attach their properties.
In the charge sheet of the murder case, former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and Awami League (AL) leader Torab Ali and 21 other civilians have been made accused.
Later, CID also submitted another charge sheet against 807 BDR personnel and one civilian in another case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
A total of 2,307 people have been arrested so far in connection with the mutiny, all except 25 taken on remand, and 543 gave confessional statements.
A total of 75 people, including 57 army officials, were killed during the mutiny at Bangladesh Rifles headquarters.
