Five cops injured in clash with gamblers
Six DB police closed
Five cops of Gaibandha detective branch (DB) sustained injuries in a clash with gamblers and their supporters on the occasion of a boat race on river Jamuna at Utter Uria in Fulchari upazila on Thursday.
Meanwhile, six of the DB police were closed yesterday on charge of unauthorised intervention in the area.
They are Sub-Inspector (SI) Iajuddin, Assistant Sub Inspectors Anisur Rahman and Rabiul Islam and constables Abdur Razzak, Wares Ali and Altaf Hossain.
Police said villagers of Utter Uria arranged a boat race competition on river Jamuna. On the occasion a gang of gamblers set up makeshift tents for gambling.
On information, the plain-clothes police rushed to the spot to arrest the gamblers, police added.
Locals however alleged that the policemen went there to extort money from the gamblers.
The gamblers and police locked in an altercation that soon turned violent. Gamblers chased the policemen and threw bricks at them.
Five cops sustained injuries with three seriously hurt.
Later, additional police led by ASP Akhter Hossain rushed to the spot and rescued the trapped cops. Sensing police presence, the gamblers and their supporters fled.
