BNP not joining session to hide corruption of Tarique, Koko
Says Hanif
Joint General Secretary of Awami League Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday said BNP has decided not to join parliament to hinder the trial of the war criminals and to cover up the corruption of Khaleda Zia's two sons, Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko.
"BNP won't be able to show any logic behind their attempts to save war criminals if the issue is discussed in the House in its presence and that's why it decided to boycott the session," said Mahbubul Alam Hanif.
"The opposition party wants to save the war criminals and Khaleda's two sons from corruption charges by resorting to movements and boycotting parliament. And for this they made the decision not to join the House to mislead people," he told The Daily Star.
Hanif, also a special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said, "When Khaleda Zia told the media that her party wants to cooperate with the government on Eid day [September 11], we thought BNP will join parliament to contribute in establishing healthy positive political culture in Bangladesh."
But with their decision, it is clear that BNP does not want positive politics in the country, he added.
Thursday's meeting of the BNP standing committee, the highest policymaking body of the party, decided not to join the current parliament session, accusing the government of not creating an environment for the opposition to return to the House.
The AL leader urged the main opposition party to join parliament and place whatever demands they have.
