Plot on to kill Hasina
Say AL leaders
Ruling Awami League (AL) yesterday expressed concern over the security of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's life, as the enemies at home and abroad have been conspiring to assassinate her to hinder the trial of war criminals and culprits of August 21 grenade attack and 10 trucks arms smuggling.
AL Acting President Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury and General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam expressed their concerns at different discussion programmes in the city arranged for marking the 64th birth anniversary of Sheikh Hasina, also president of AL.
Speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club, Sajeda, who is deputy leader of the parliament, said the war criminals did not sit idle. They have been conspiring one after another. "So, Awami League is concerned over the security of Sheikh Hasina's life."
Bangabandhu Shishu-Kishore Mela organised the discussion with its Chief Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury in the chair.
The acting AL chief said they implemented the verdict of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case and no one could be able to stop them. Like it, the government will hold trial of war criminals, she said adding that many stalwart war criminals have been sent behind bar and others would be nabbed soon.
Addressing another discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium, Syed Ashraf, also the LGRD and cooperatives minister, said Sheikh Hasina was not safe as she came under attacks at different times earlier.
Awami Jubo League organised the discussion with its Acting Chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury in the chair. AL leaders Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Mirza Azam also spoke.
Saying Hasina has enemies at both home and abroad, Syed Ashraf urged the party men to work unitedly to save the premier's life.
He said achievements of the government and Sheikh Hasina cannot be marred due to some "irresponsible workers" of the party. He urged them to get more responsible towards their work so that the image of the prime minister is not tarnished a bit.
Talking to The Daily Star, Hanif, also a special assistant to the prime minister, said half of the killers of Bangabandhu who have absconded abroad could plot a new conspiracy to assassinate Hasina in collaboration with the main opposition BNP, which helped the killers through different means.
War criminals, culprits and mastermind of August 21 grenade attack and 10 trucks arms smuggling are also involved in the plot, he said. They (plotters) know if Hasina could be assassinated then they would not have to face trial, said Hanif, a joint general secretary of AL.
AL Presidium Member Obaidul Quader told The Daily Star that both the administration and the party should take prior appropriate measures to beef up security for Sheikh Hasina.
