Duke sent to jail
A Dhaka court yesterday sent Saiful Islam Duke, nephew of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, to jail in connection with the August 21, 2004 grenade attack case on Awami League rally.
Third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ali Hussain passed the order after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced Duke before it on completion of his two-day remand.
The order came when Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, Abdul Kahar Akond, CID's special superintendent of police, did not seek further remand for interrogation.
In the forwarding report, the IO appealed to the court to confine Duke in jail, as police are verifying the information gleaned from him.
Duke was arrested on August 26 for his alleged involvement in the August 21 grenade attack that killed 24 AL leaders and activists and injured 200 more.
Earlier, CID pressed charges against 22 people including Harkatul Jihad (Huji) Chief Moulana Mufti Abdul Hannan and BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu in connection with the case. But the court on August 3, 2009 ordered further investigation to unearth the sources of grenades and other persons involved.
