Only JS can amend constitution: Delwar
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday said none other than the parliament has any authority to amend the constitution.
“Only the parliament has the jurisdiction to make any amendment to the constitution,” he said while addressing a meeting at the National Press Club in the city organised by National Democratic Party (NDP) in observance of its 21th founding anniversary.
Earlier, on Thursday, new Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque called upon the government to reprint the constitution in the light of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the High Court order invalidating the Fifth Amendment.
“Soon after pronouncing the judgment by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on the 5th Amendment, the relevant articles of the original 1972 constitution have been restored automatically,” the new CJ said.
Delwar said it is the elected representatives of the parliament who will decide on what to be amended and how much to be amended. “It'll be decided in parliament.”
Addressing another meeting yesterday, Delwar accused the government is misleading information on the whereabouts of BNP leader and DCC ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam.
City unit BNP arranged the meeting at Muktangon demanding to know the whereabouts of Chowdhury Alam who went missing 100 days ago.
BNP leaders Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Habibunnnabi Khan Sohel, Abdus Salam and Shirin Sultana also addressed the meeting.
