Work as 'ambassadors' of government
Chief Info Commissioner asks district information officers
Chief Information Commissioner Muhammad Zamir yesterday urged district information officers to work as the ambassadors of the government for implementing the Digital Bangladesh project at district level.
"You will inform people at the grassroots level about new e-services and inform the government of people's needs," he said.
As the chief guest, CIC Zamir was addressing the inaugural session of a workshop for district information officers (DIO) on Digital Bangladesh at the prime minister's office (PMO).
Information Ministry, Mass Communication Directorate and Access to Information (A2I) Programme of PMO jointly organised the workshop.
With Nazrul Islam Khan, national project director of A2I programme; in the chair, the function was attended by Mahfuzur Rahman, acting director of mass communication directorate; Forhad Hossain, joint secretary of the information ministry; as special guests.
The CIC said transparency and accountability are two vital elements of good governance that can be ensured through free flow of information. Maximum proactive disclosure is the main principle of the concept of right to information.
According to him, transparency and accountability in all areas of the society can only be ensured if the demand and supply sides of information disclosure are strengthened.
Information Commission has been working to make sure that the designated officers are appointed soon.
Zamir also criticised NGOs saying that not even one percent of the NGOs have appointed designated officers to provide information.
He regretted that the public officers who are designated to provide information to the public are not awarded.
Nazrul Islam Khan said the Internet services at all public offices would establish connectivity with the upcoming information centres in progress at all the unions, making a bridge of information between the rural people and the government service providing organisations.
"We hope that the Union Information Centres (UICs) will bring huge positive changes in the rural areas towards making the government's vision of building Digital Bangladesh a success," Khan said.
