SC stays Pintu's bail
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld its chamber judge's order that stayed a High Court bail granted to former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu in a BDR carnage case.
Headed by Justice ABM Khairul Haque, a three-member bench of the apex court passed the order after disposing of a government petition.
The bench also said Pintu can now file a fresh bail petition with the HC, since charge sheet of this case has been submitted to the trial court.
On May 3, the HC gave bail to Pintu in the case; the SC chamber judge stayed the HC order the following day.
The chamber judge also asked the government to file a leave-to-appeal petition with the Appellate Division against the HC order; the government has filed the petition recently.
In connection with the February 25-26 carnage in 2009, police filed the case with Lalbagh Police Station on February 28 and arrested Pintu on June 1 the same year.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved the leave-to-appeal petition, while Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain appeared for Pintu.
