Five killed, 49 injured in road crashes

Five people were killed and 49 others injured in two road accidents in Barisal and Sylhet districts yesterday. A Correspondent from Barisal reports: Two people of a bridal party were killed and 14 others injured in a road accident on Barisal-Dhaka Highway at Tarakupi in Gournadi upazila on Tuesday morning. The dead were identified as Hosneara Begum, 35, and Nargis Begum, 20. Parvin Begum, Fatema and Sohag were sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital while Aleya Begum and Nasiruddin to the upazila health complex. Nurul Islam, OC of Gournadi Police Station, said 16 people of the bridal party was going to Kalihati in Uzirpur upazila of the district from Baghmara village in Gournadi upazila in a human hauler (Nasimon). The accident occurred at about 9:00 am when a Faridpur-bound truck hit the Nasimon from its opposite direction, killing the two on the spot and injuring 14 others, said the OC. Our Staff Correspondent from Sylhet says: Three people were killed and 35 others injured in a road accident near Salutikor on Sylhet-Companiganj Road yesterday afternoon. The dead were identified as Zuned Ahmed, 5, son of Shafique Miah of Dhalarpar in Companiganj, Shoebur Rahman, 28, and Tarendra, 25. Locals and police said the accident happened at about 1:00pm when the driver of a district-bound bus from Companiganj lost control over the steering and skidded off the road. Twenty of the injured were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
