Make challenged people assets: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday underscored the need for training and skill development of the persons with disability to make them assets of the nation. “Don't think them (persons with disability) as burden of the country, train them, make them skilled and you will see they contribute a lot for the development of the country,” she said while a delegation of the National Alliance of Disabled Peoples Organisation (NADPO) called on her at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the city. A 25- member delegation led by the organisation's President Abdus Sattar Dular explained to the prime minister about their problems. She gave assured them of solving their problems. She said her government is sincere about the rights of the persons with disability and has been working relentlessly for their well-being. PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting. Hasina asked all to come forward to turn the persons with disability into human resources. They should not be considered burden for the society. They are the inseparable part of the society and they have the ability to contribute to the nation building efforts if their proper rights and opportunities are ensured. She recalled the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had first introduced quota for the persons with disability in the government services. Her government is taking steps to reactivate the Disabled Welfare Foundation so that it can contribute to the welfare of the disabled persons. In this connection she said the foundation was created during her first tenure of government. Later BNP-Jamaat government put it under the control of NGO. “With this irresponsible act the persons with disability were deprived from their desired development and a section of vested quarter gained a lot,” she said. She emphasised creating awareness about the rights of the persons with disability so that they can receive equal treatment in the society. Hasina said Bangladesh would have been a model country in the world if Bangabandhu were alive and continued his great effort for nation building. NADPO delegation congratulated the PM for the MDG-4 award. They also apprised her about their situation and needs. Prime minister assured of redressing the problems.
