Social bodies hail government

Different social organisations yesterday hailed the government for passing the “The Domestic Violence (Protection and Preservation) Bill 2010.” Passed on October 5 in the national parliament, the bill kept strong provisions to protect women and children from family violence and repression. Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), in a press release yesterday, hailed the move of the government. MJF thinks the law will create a way to attain justice for women who are under repression and also provide a way of getting children's protection and justice. Executive Director of MJF Shaheen Anam considered the move as a historic event of the country. She assured of all out support from MJF to the government. Voice against Domestic Violence, a citizen's initiative against domestic violence, praised the government for passing the bill. The women of the country will get justice through this law, said a press release of the organisation. Hailing the government, Salma Ali, executive director of Bangladesh Jatiya Mahila Ainjibi Samity, said it is a great achievement for the women of the country and a successful attempt of both the government and private initiatives. Citizens' Initiative on CEDAW, Bangladesh, Steps Towards Development, Gender and Development Alliance also hailed the government for the bill.
