Ruling MPs hail PM, blast BNP for past 'misrule'

Ending a marathon discussion, the House yesterday passed a resolution on thanks giving to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for receiving UN award for Bangladesh for its remarkable achievements in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly in reducing child mortality. However, the treasury bench lawmakers in their deliberations also blasted the main opposition BNP for their past 'misrule' and present 'anti-people' activities. Participating in the discussion, Awami League (AL) led ruling alliance lawmakers highly lauded the premier's role in leading the country towards prosperity what they mentioned as success achieved in different sectors. In response to an instant proposal of Jatiya Samjtantrik Dal lawmaker Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, MPs stood up to honour the premier, who was present in the House during the discussion. Sheikh Hasina, also the leader of the House, who was present almost whole of the time during the discussion, was seen to go through different official files. The treasury bench lawmakers castigated the BNP leaders who claimed that it is the credit of past BNP government led by Khaleda Zia for getting the UN award for attaining remarkable success in achieving MDGs. Speaker Abdul Hamid, who could not join formally in the discussion, also congratulated the premier. In his concluding speech to the sixth session, Hamid said the Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina is working tirelessly to meet the aspiration of entire country and its people. “We are proud of the unique success [UN award] of the grand alliance government under her competent leadership,” Hamid said. Wrapping up the discussion that lasted for three hours with participation of 28 lawmakers, the House passed the motion. “Country's people and the Jatiya Sangsad are sincerely congratulating Hon'ble Prime Minister Deshratna Sheikh Hasina on receiving the UN award for attaining unthinkable success in achieving MDGs,” said the motion unanimously passed by the House amid huge desk thumping by lawmakers. Prime Minister Hasina accepted the award in a colourful function at a hotel in New York on September 20. Printed copies of answers to all questions were placed on the table to save time in discussion. According to scheduled business of yesterday's sitting, one and half an hour was allocated for question answer session including half an hour for the prime minister to reply lawmakers' queries. AL lawmaker Apu Ukil placed the motion for holding the discussion and thanks giving to the premier. “She is one of the greatest leaders of the world,” said Apu who kicked off the marathon discussion. Participating in the discussion, AL senior leader Abdur Razzaq said Sheikh Hasina is the winner of the UN award as she has become symbol of people's hopes and aspirations of the country. AL MP Suranjit Sengupta said the award will encourage country's people to take the country ahead. “A new Bangladesh will be built under competent, efficient and intelligent leadership of Sheikh Hasina,” Suranjit said. AL presidium member Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir said the premier has brought rare honour for us by receiving the UN award. AL lawmaker Abdul Matin Khasru, however, urged the premier to take stern actions against those who are engaged in misdeeds to tarnish the government's image. AL lawmaker Rawshan Jahan Sathi eulogising Hasina said, “The way she ran the country in past and is running now makes her a successful statesman and she is a wonder.” “It's not possible to praise her in only five minutes,” Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, chief of the parliamentary standing committee on the communications ministry, said citing his time allocated for speaking on the motion. In an apparent effort to describe the premier's generosity, AL lawmaker Abdul Mannan said on return the prime minister portrayed the achievement of the UN award belongs to the entire nation. Joining the discussion later, AL lawmaker Israfil Alam, who is also chief of the parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry, however, said credit of achieving the UN award actually goes to the prime minister no matter what others say. They said Hasina received some international awards and honorary degree for her role in poverty reduction, attaining food sufficiency, empowering women and other sectors. The treasury bench lawmakers also lauded the present government under the leadership of Hasina for taking steps to hold trial of war criminals, completing trial of Bangabandhu killing case, freeing the country from stigma of militancy. Later, Hasina expressed her gratitude to the lawmakers for the thanks giving motion. She said people are partner of the achievement as they voted her party to power to achieve the success, she said. She also thanked field level health officials, physicians and others whose works contributed to reduce child mortality. “I dedicate the award to the country's people,” Hasina said in her winding up speech to the sixth session of the parliament.
