Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from her welfare fund donated Tk 5 lakh in aid of 'Pop Guru' and valiant freedom fighter Azam Khan, who has been suffering from oral cancer. PM's deputy press secretary Md Nazrul Islam and assignment officer Manjo Kanti Boral handed over the cheque to Azam Khan at his Kamlapur residence in the city yesterday afternoon. The Prime Minister previously donated Tk 2 lakh for the treatment of the ailing pop singer. Receiving the cheque, Azam Khan in an emotion-choked voice expressed gratitude to the prime minister for her support towards his treatment. The 61-year-old pop legend earlier in last July underwent treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Azam Khan, full name Mahbubul Haque Khan, born February 28 in 1950, is the pioneer of Bangla pop music. He is revered as the Guru of pop music in Bangladesh. Azam Khan, who fought valiantly in the country's Liberation War in 1971 against the Pakistani occupation army, introduced an energetic brand of music. His first concert in television was broadcast in 1972 in Bangladesh Television (BTV). His popular songs include “Ore Saleka, Ore Maleka”, “Jibone Kichhu Pabona Re”, “Ami Jare Chaire”, “Ashi Ashi Bole Tumi”, “Obhimani”, “Rail Liner Bostite”, and “Hei Allah, Hei Allah Re”. Now in his 60s, Azam Khan still has a cult-following among the youths in their 20s as well as the members of the earlier generation who are in their 30s and 40s.
