Govt wants united voice on climate change vulnerability
Says Minister
The government wants to raise a united voice on climate change vulnerability, as it is a matter of concern for all, said State Minister for Environment and Forest Hasan Mahmud yesterday.
“The government wants to raise a united voice from Bangladesh for its climate change vulnerability and that is why the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the environment and forest ministry is taken from the opposition BNP,” he said at a seminar in the city.
Palli Karma Shahayak Foundation (PKSF) organised the seminar on 'Environmental degradation in Bangladesh and the consequences of climate change: reality and duties' at the Bangabandhu International Convention Centre marking its 20th anniversary.
Referring steps to combat the climate change risks in Bangladesh, the minister said the government wants to take a long-term plan to cope with the worst effects of climate change.
He said the government has built a climate change resilience fund and started disbursing it for researches, ensuring accountability and transparency of the utilisation of the funds.
Bangladesh has set up an example at the international level in disaster management and addressing the climate change issue, the minister said.
Presenting the keynote paper, environmental scientist Dr Ansarul Karim said as consequence of climate change, Bangladesh is already experiencing an increased frequency of cyclones, increased salinity and rise in temperature.
There are several plans to fight the climate change risks, he said adding, “But only making good plans will not be enough to face the consequence. We have to implement the plans in an integrated way,” he said.
Presiding over the seminar, PKSF Chairman Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad said climate change is a man-made phenomenon. “We are the most vulnerable to climate change consequences but we are not responsible for it,” he said.
