Robbery, mugging go unabated in city
Law and order situation has seriously deteriorated in the city due to a sharp rise in criminal activities over the last three months with at least 68 people being killed and robbery, mugging and other petty crimes going unabated.
Unlikely to admit the gravity of the situation, police said the recent release of around 100 notorious criminals on bail from jails in the city contributed to the deterioration of the law and order situation.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) sources, 17 people were killed in August, 19 in September, and over 32 people in October in different incidents across the city.
In three months prior to August, around 45 people were killed, added the sources.
Deputy Commissioner Monirul Islam, spokesman for the DMP commissioner, reasoned out that over 100 notorious criminals were released on bail recently.
He added that criminals involved in drug peddling changed their tracks amid recent drives by police against them.
Monirul said they have already started special drives to seize illegal firearms across the city and other measures will be adopted soon. He said armed drug peddlers recently have become desperate after police destroyed their hideouts and networks at slums along the rail tracks in the capital.
Residents in most parts of the city are trying to ensure their own security by introducing neighbourhood watch at night. They often fall victim to robbery and snatching due to poor vigilance by law enforcers.
On the night of November 5, locals on patrol beat five suspected robbers to death and injured another at Habibnagar of Kadamtoli in the capital. It was a form of outburst by the residents in panic as five robberies took place in the area within just one month.
Community leaders of Habibnagar said they introduced neighbourhood watch following recent escalation of robbery in the area and had informed police of it.
Criminals continued their crimes with impunity and became more desperate.
On Monday night, armed criminals snatched the belongings of a woman and tried to abduct her young daughter in Banani.
However locals rescued the girl and caught one of the criminals with a private car and firearms.
City dwellers observed that if police personnel discharged their duty properly, the situation could improve to a great extent.
