BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday told the US ambassador that her party would play a role in parliament at sometime in the future. The US Ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty called on Khaleda at her Gulshan office in the city at 7:00pm. After the meeting, Moriarty told reporters that Khaleda assured of her party's role in parliament at some point in the future. He said they always encourage the ruling and opposition parties to work together constructively for the betterment of the country. BNP Vice-Chairman Shamser Mobin Chowdhury, who was at the meeting, told reporters that Khaleda agreed with Moriarty on parliament being an important place where discussion can be held on all matters. Shamser said the BNP chairperson wanted a congenial environment in parliament for such discussions. During the more than one hour meeting, matters of bilateral relations between the two countries, regional and international issues and US President Barack Obama's recent visit to India were discussed. Moriarty said he briefed Khaleda on his recent trip to Washington and on President Obama's initiative in global health and food security for major countries involved and climate change. Khaleda said President Obama's recent visit to India reflects the US government's Asia-based foreign policy, said Shamser. Khaleda said while BNP was in power, there was cordial relations and cooperation between US and Bangladesh and they still sustain. She hoped that relations would blossom in the days ahead so that both sides benefit. She particularly emphasised increasing trade relations between Dhaka and Washington and hoped that the US government and Congress will extend cooperation to this end.
