Shaheed Noor Hossain Day today

Shaheed Noor Hossain Day will be observed today with various programmes chalked out by different political and socio-cultural organisations. On November 10 of 1987, Noor Hossain, a young pro-democracy activist, was gunned down by police at Zero Point of Gulistan in the city while participating in a procession against the then autocratic regime of Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Interestingly, Jatiya Party, founded by the former military ruler turned politician Ershad, will also observe the day as 'Democratic Day'. Jatiya Party is a part of the current grand alliance government led by Awami League. The party chief is scheduled to address a discussion meeting at the city's Diploma Engineers auditorium. Shaheed Noor Hossain had a slogan 'Swairachar Nipat Jak, Gonotantra Mukti Pak' (Down with autocracy, let democracy be freed) inscribed in white paint on his chest and back when a bullet, shot by police, took his life. President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages said Noor's sacrifice brought pace to the movement against the then autocratic ruler.
