The US government wants to provide technical support and training to Bangladesh Armed Forces, said Gen Gary L North, commander of US Pacific Air Forces, yesterday. General North expressed the US keenness when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the city. Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting. General North highly praised Bangladesh's contribution and performance in the UN peacekeeping missions. In this regard, he eulogised Hasina's stand for peace and her “visionary and wise leadership.” In reply, prime minister thanked the US government for standing beside the people of Bangladesh during various natural calamities. She mentioned the US government's 'Operation Sea Angel' launched in aid of the people after the cyclone in 1991, considered as one of the deadliest tropical cyclones on record, which hit Chittagong leaving several lakh people killed and as many as 10 million homeless. Hasina said the then BNP government had “totally failed” to protect people from the disastrous loss of the cyclone. She further thanked the US government for its assistance to the people of Bangladesh following the recent cyclonic storm Sidr. Mentioning the existing friendly relations between the two countries, the prime minister said the US humanitarian assistances have further strengthened the bilateral ties.
