'Stop tobacco farming'

Staff Correspondent
Environmentalists and development workers yesterday called upon the government to curb tobacco farming to ensure food security, prevent deaths from tobacco consumption, and secure proper education of children. The demand came from a sit-in organised by Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance (BATA) in front of the Jatiya Press Club yesterday, says a press release. To achieve food security, the government should take immediate and effective measures to stop tobacco cultivation in the farmlands across the country, said the speakers adding that decrease in tobacco cultivation will increase rice production. BATA Office Secretary Syed Mahbubul Alam said the farmers are directly affected both economically and physically due to tobacco cultivation, and their farmlands are losing fertility gradually. Representatives from Work for Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust, Green Voice, Poribesh Bachao Andolan (Poba) participated in the programme.
