Timely steps helped avert recession: PM
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina yesterday said effective and timely steps by the present government were behind Bangladesh's success in averting the world economic meltdown when most of the strong economic countries were badly affected.
She made the remark when Governor of the State of Oregon Theodore Kulongoski called on her at the prime minister's office (PMO).
The PM said during the recession period, her government was able to save the country from the impacts of the worldwide economic crisis.
Press Secretary to the PM Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.
The PM said the present government is now putting highest emphasis on computer learning and training to fulfill the vision of 'Digital Bangladesh'.
She mentioned that the present government has formulated the new education policy in view of the current trend of world education.
She said bilateral relations between Bangladesh and USA would strengthen further.
During the meeting, the PM and the governor discussed on education, food security, Bangladesh's peacekeeping force, agriculture, subsidy on fertiliser and alleviation of poverty.
The governor is now in Bangladesh under the State Partnership Programme of the United States.
The PM and the governor also discussed on cooperation in various sectors including training for the Bangladesh Armed Forces by the Oregon National Guard.
The governor praised the pragmatic leadership of the PM. He specially thanked Hasina for Bangladesh's contribution to the UN peacekeeping missions.
