Col Taher's Trial
Make documents public
Speakers at a discussion here on Wednesday urged government to hold trial of the killing of Colonel Abu Taher and make public all documents of the trial that hanged him.
Recalling their memories, speakers said Taher was that kind of visionary and revolutionary who wanted to make the country's armed forces productive and act as a friend of the people.
They were addressing the discussion in observance of 'People-Soldier Uprising Day, November 7' organised by People-Soldier Uprising Day Udjapan Parishad at Muslim Institute Hall.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rab spoke as the chief guest and Mahmudur Rahman Manna, former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), was present as the special guest.
Rab said some military personnel, including later president Ziaur Rahman, killed Taher to stay in power.
“It is true that Taher freed him (Zia) from the prison but in the end he (Zia) hanged Taher in the name of trial,” he said.
Recalling Taher's contributions, Manna said Bangladesh now needs a brave and straightforward leader like Taher.
Former general secretary of Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) Golam Gilani Chowdhury presided over the programme.
JSD Advisor Abul Kalam Azad, Liberation Movement and Liberation War Research Trust Chairman Dr Mahafuzur Rahman, JSD Standing Committee Vice Presidents Md Nuruddin Jahed Manju and Fahim Uddin Ahmed and JSD leader Tayabur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
