Attorney General Mahbubey Alam yesterday said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will commit contempt of court if she stays in the cantonment residence after November 12 (today) since the Supreme Court has not stayed the High Court (HC) verdict. The HC in its verdict on October 13 asked the government to give Khaleda 30 days' time to vacate the house and the time runs out today, the attorney general told reporters at a briefing at his office in the afternoon. He said his office yesterday received a certified copy of Wednesday's SC order that has not stayed the HC verdict but adjourned till November 29 the hearing on Khaleda's appeal challenging the HC verdict. It will not be illegal if the government takes any step to evict Khaleda from the cantonment residence after November 12, he said. Asked whether his office will bring contempt of court charge against the BNP chief if she does not leave the house after November 12, the chief state law officer said he cannot say about it at this moment. He, however, said the residence, where Khaleda is staying, is the property of the army, and the army will decide what would be their role over this residence. Meanwhile, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Khandker Mahbub Hossain, also a pro-BNP lawyer, told reporters at his office that the government should not take any action to force the BNP chairperson to leave the residence before disposal of her leave to appeal petition by the SC. There is no precedent of implementing the HC verdict when there is an appeal against it pending with the SC, he added.
