Newsprint worth Tk 10 lakh of The Daily Star stolen
Twenty-four rolls of imported newsprint worth Tk 10 lakh got stolen as a truckload of paper for The Daily Star went missing from West Madarbari area early yesterday.
The empty truck was located around 11:00am yesterday near Lalmai in Comilla while the paper was found inside a rice mill in Jamidarhat of Begumganj, Noakhali.
Sujan Saha, a director of M/S New Rupali Carrier, said they hired the truck to carry the newsprints from a Deen Mohammad of Noakhali.
The truck was loaded with the paper around 8:00pm at Chittagong Port on Wednesday.
Quoting the driver, Saha said the truck was parked near the Water Tank area at West Madarbari of the port city and it was supposed to head towards the Dhaka office of The Daily Star around 4:00am yesterday.
When the driver of the truck, Md Saiful Islam, reached the spot he could not find the truck. Saiful's assistant was in the truck, he added.
Locals of Jamidarhat of Begumganj in Noakhali found the paper lying in the warehouse of Nayan Rice Mill late last night. They informed police of the matter.
Later, the police from Begumganj station recovered the paper from the rice mill.
Two brothers who own the rice mill are now on the run.
Sujan Saha had filed a case with Double Mooring Police Station earlier accusing Deen Mohammad and driver Saiful Islam.
