Hospitals, clinics in vacation mood

Staff Correspondent
Hospitals and clinics are ready to assign the total duty to a handful of staffs ahead of the Eid causing dissatisfaction among the patients. Vacation mood has already touched the hospitals as most of the staffs are going home. All the hospitals in the capital suffer badly from manpower crisis during Eid vacation every year. "We're trying to manage the backlog with the reduced manpower. The operations scheduled for tomorrow are taking place today," said Director of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Brig Gen Shahidul Haque Mallik. "We cannot deny the right to leave on vacation. A significant number of doctors and nurses won't be available next few days. But it won't have much effect. "Patient pressure also reduces during Eid vacation and fewer doctors and nurses can manage it. Besides, doctors and nurses of other religion would be on service. "Moreover, we have to run the outdoor services before and after the Eid day for the first time as per the government instructions. So a number of doctors have to stay anyhow," he said. A total of 1,367 patients were committed to the hospital yesterday, whereas the average number is more than 2,000. There were only eight patients in the corridor of ward 30 and 32, though normally one can hardly walk through it because of patients. Whatever the vacation scenario, the hospital would admit patients to save their lives. "But the private clinics and hospitals don't do that. They just refer the patients to us," said Brig Gen Mallik. Patients of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) would not receive angiogram and routine surgery for next four days, said Resident Physician Kajal Kumar Karmaker. Of the 150 doctors and 251 nurses, 22 doctors and 104 nurses would work in next four days, he said, adding, the number of incoming patients has also reduced. Mitford Hospital was also experiencing fewer patients in the last few days. Director of Mitford Khademul Ehsan Iqbal said they would provide outdoor services before and after the Eid day.
