Call to assess investment, finance flows for facing climate impact
Speakers yesterday called for urgently assessing investment and financial flows required for addressing the adverse impacts of the climate change in the short, medium and long-terms to ensure climate-proof low carbon development in Bangladesh over 2010-30.
They were addressing at an inter-ministerial and stakeholder national workshop on climate investment and finance organised by Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF), UNDP and FEJB at the National Press Club.
Environment Secretary Dr Mihir Kanti Majumder, UNDP Deputy Country Director Robert Jukkum, different sectoral team leaders Dr Q K Ahmad, Dr M Asaduzzaman, Dr Rezaul Karim, Dr Ainun Nishat, Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Dr Atiq A Rahman made presentations while Environment Ministry Joint Secretary Dr M Nasiruddin chaired the day-long workshop sessions.
Dr Mihir underscored the need for finalising the investment and flows analysis quickly so that government could make prudent policy decision-making as well as immediate implementation of Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP), 2009.
UNDP Deputy Country Director Jukkum commended the efforts of the government for undertaking the initiative to assess investment and financial flows with the ultimate objective of reaching the benefits to the people and assured of UNDP's support in delivering the funds to the government, civil society and institutions.
High officials from different line ministries, department and agencies and representatives from civil society bodies, NGOs and media actively participated in the national workshop to chart out the investment and financial flows for 2010-2030 to face adverse impacts of climate change in the country.
The assessment work, Dr Nasir hoped, would be completed by January next.
