Dewan Farid Gazi laid to rest

Ruling Awami League lawmaker and veteran freedom fighter Dewan Farid Gazi was laid to rest with state honour at the graveyard beside the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet city yesterday afternoon. Maulana Asad Uddin Ahmed, imam of the shrine, led his namaz-e-janaza at Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa. Earlier, the body was kept at Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar where people from all walks of life paid their last respect. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Sylhet Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, AL Central Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj and the deceased's son Gazi Shahnewaz addressed the audience before the janaza. Lawmakers Imran Ahmed and Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, district BNP President M Ilyas Ali, former lawmaker Dilder Hossain Selim and leaders of different political parties attended the janaza. Earlier, the body was brought from the city to Bahuban upazila parishad premises where thousands of people joined the first janaza at 9:00am. His second janaza was held at his village in Devpara of Nabiganj upazila at 10:00am followed by the third one at Nabiganj JK High School at 11:00am. His fourth janaza was held at Sherpur in Moulvibazar district on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at 12:00noon. Farid Gazi, a member of Awami League Advisory Council and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, breathed his last at Square Hospital in Dhaka on Friday at 5:40am. He was admitted to the hospital on October 14 and was transferred to the CCU in the same hospital on November 12. Farid Gazi was suffering from kidney, heart and other complexities related to diabetes for a long time. Dewan Farid Gazi was born at Debpur village of Nabiganj upazila at Habiganj district in 1924. A young Gazi joined the Quit India Movement in 1942 and in the language movement in 1952. He came in close touch with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during the Jukta Front election and served as a joint convener in the election committee in Sylhet at that time. He was also the civilian adviser for sector 4 and sector 5 in the War of Liberation. Farid Gazi was elected member of National Assembly from Sylhet sadar in 1970. He was elected member of parliament in 1973 and was made state minister for commerce in Bangabandhu's cabinet. He was also a state minister during the Moshtaque-led government. The well accepted man was elected in 1996, 2001 and 2008 from his home constituency Habiganj-1 (Nabiganj and Bahubal upazilas). Farid Gazi also served as the editor of the then weekly Jugabhery (now daily) in 1952-54 and the weekly Eastern Herald (now defunct) in 1953-55.
