An attempt to protect Khaleda's house
Say pro-AL lawyers
Pro-Awami League (AL) lawyers yesterday said the Molotov cocktails were hurled into the compound of chief justice to protect Khaleda Zia's cantonment house.
The attempt was also made to protect her two sons as well as the war criminals, as the opposition BNP and its ally Jamaat-Shibir had failed to find any political issue against the government, they said.
Molotov cocktail explosion on the CJ's residence, August 21 grenade attack, ten truck arms haul in Chittagong, bomb blasts in Kotalipara, on the meeting of Communist Party of Bangladesh and Ramna Batamul are all linked, said Moshfaqur Rahman Sabuj, assistant secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
He read out a written statement at a press conference organised by the pro-AL lawyers under the banner of SCBA at its south hall in the afternoon.
The Molotov cocktail explosion took place following the recent statements by some BNP senior leaders and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (JAF) leaders, he said.
“We feel that the Molotov cocktail explosion was a declaration of emerging militancy and an attack on the spirit of War of Liberation and the judicial system of the country,” Moshfaqur said.
He demanded the government to find the culprits involved in the attack and take proper steps against them.
Moshfaqur said SCBA President Khandker Mahbub Hossain and its Secretary Bodruddoza Badal are acting as leaders of JAF forgetting their official duties.
Former SCBA president M Amir-Ul Islam urged Khandker Mahbub not to use the bar association as a political platform and to refrain from anarchic activities.
“We, the lawyers, are anxious that an ill attempt is in motion to make the apex court controversial by using the name and platform of the Supreme Court Bar Association,” he said.
Asked about the pro-Al lawyers' statements, Bodruddoza told The Daily Star that those commenting in advance on the Molotov cocktail explosion before investigation know who the culprits are.
The Molotov cocktail explosion is a blue print of those who are making such comments, he said.
Bodruddoza also said the existing committee of the SCBA is not using bar as a political platform as it has not observed any political programmes under its banner.
AL Presidium Member Yusuf Hossain Humayun, SCBA Vice President AKM Fazlul Haque Khan Farid and former vice president Subrata Chowdhury, Advocate Mostafa Zaman Islam and Advocate Bishmadev Chakrabartee were present at the press conference.
