150MW rental power deal with British co signed

The Power Development Board (PDB) yesterday signed a 150-megawatt rental power agreement with British company Aggreko and issued notices to award eight power contracts mostly to local companies to generate 1,240MW of electricity. PDB sources said the Aggreko deal was for two gas-fired power plants in Brahmanbaria (80MW) and Ashuganj (70MW) as a fail-safe measure to ensure maximum power generation in the next irrigation season in February. The British company would enjoy a three-year contract term. Aggreko had previously installed two 100MW rental power units in Bangladesh ahead of its contract deadline, a feat no other rental power companies could demonstrate so far. This has prompted PDB to ask Aggreko for further involvement. The PDB yesterday also issued Letter of Intent (LoI) to local company Summit and its US partner GE to sign two large power plant agreements within 30 days. The projects -- Meghnaghat 335MW dual fuel unit and the Bibiyana phase two 340MW combined cycle gas fired power project -- will come into full operation in three years from signing the contracts. Summit, the first local company to be involved with large-scale investment in the power sector, was previously awarded with Bibiyana first phase 340MW power contract. Another LoI was issued to Malaysian-Bangladeshi joint venture Ranhil-STS to sign the contract for Bhola 225MW gas-based power project. This project will come into full operation within 32 months 0f signing the deal. The PDB issued notices to award contracts to five local rental power companies. These are: United Enterprise for a 53MW gas-fired unit in Ghorashal or Ashuganj, EQ Capital Energy for a 48MW barge-mounted gas fired power project, Wintara for a 99MW rental power plant in Ghorashal or Narsingdi, APR energy for a 50MW gas fired rental power plant in Meghnaghat and Cambridge Energy Waste Management for a 90MW furnace oil fired combined cycle rental plant in Barisal or Chandpur. All these plants will have to be set up within around four months from signing the contracts. The companies will enjoy a contract term of three to five years.
