Protect ecology of oceans
Shipping minister urges all countries
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday called for global efforts to protect the environment and ecology of the oceans.
Shahjahan made the call while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a three-day workshop in the city.
He said the wastes dumped in the sea travel from one country to another amid high and low tide, causing damage to aquatic animals and polluting the seawater seriously. So we all have to contribute to saving the environment of the oceans, he added.
Directorate of Marine Transport and International Maritime Organisation jointly organised the workshop on 'London Dumping Convention and Necessity of Implementing London Protocol and Saving Marine Environment'.
Shahjahan said the government is committed to saving the environment and has taken various measures in this regard.
He said the government has bought a ship to keep the sea free from wastes.
Around 40 officials from shipping ministry, IMO, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Academy are participating in the workshop.
Shahjahan said the ministry would consider the recommendations of the workshop in implementing the London Protocol.
Shipping Secretary Abdul Mannan Hawlader, IMO's Marine Environment Department's representative Edward Kleverlaan and Chief Engineer and Ship Surveyor of Directorate of Marine Transport AKM Fakhrul Islam also spoke at the inaugural function.
