Cancun climate conference

LDCs urged to raise united voice

Unb, Dhaka
Leaders of All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) at a meeting yesterday stressed the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to raise united voice in upcoming Cancun Climate Conference to bring a fruitful outcome for countries vulnerable to climate change. They said although the developed countries are highly responsible for increasing global warming, the LDCs, like Bangladesh, have become worst victims of the climate change. APPG organised the national view-exchange meeting titled “The 16th World Climate Conference (COP-16) and people' s expectation of Bangladesh” at the National Press Club in the city. Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque, parliament Whip Mujibul Haque, Parliamentary Standing Committee on labour and employment ministry Chairman Israfil Alam and lawmakers Gisauddin Ahmed, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, Anisul islam Mondal, Noni Gopal Mondal and Rasheda Begum Hira, among others, addressed the meeting with lawmaker Akabbar Hossain in the chair. Centre for Global Change Executive Director Ahsan Uddin Ahmed delivered the keynote paper at the meeting. Addressing the session, Zainul said all should work together to save Bangladesh and its people from climate change impacts, as the country will be the worst victim of climate change. “If the Maldives could arrange cabinet meeting on seawater, why we can not check the river erosion in the country,” he asked. Blaming the developed countries, Zainul said although the USA could spend billions of US dollars to refrain Iran from nuclear activity, they do not show interest to spend money in saving global climate. He urged experts, civil society members, non-government organisations as well as the government to work together to address the impacts of climate change in the country. Whip Mujibul observed that if the sea level rises by one metre, about 30 percent of the costal people would become environmental refugees in the country.
