Law a must to ban hartal, says Ershad
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad has favoured formulating a law to ban hartal.
“I proposed in the parliament to make a law against hartal. Now, hartal is being enforced creating panic among the people. We cannot bring out cars on the streets fearing vandalism,” he said yesterday.
Political parties could not enforce hartal had there been a law against it, Ershad, a former military ruler, added.
His comments came a day after FBCCI president AK Azad said business leaders might propose enacting of a law to ban hartal, as it harms the economy.
He was speaking at the council of Jatiya Jubo Sanghati, an associate youth organisation of Jatiya Party, at Diploma Engineers Institute in the city.
“I had stepped down in 1990 aspiring to see economic development and democratic progress of the country. But, in fact, democracy stumbled several times. Peace and prosperity have not been ensured in the country,” he said.
Ershad, a key ally of the ruling Awami League-led government, said most people of the country are not educated enough to enjoy various democratic rights like hartal. “We must vow to establish democracy and democratic rights in the country,” the JP chief said.
Speaking as the chief guest at the council, he also urged leaders and workers to strengthen Jatiya Party and thus make the AL-led grand alliance stronger.
Ershad hopes that his party will remain in the grand alliance until the next general elections and contest the polls with the alliance.
