Launch owners yesterday anchored all launches, to and from Dhaka, off Sadarghat launch terminal protesting an assault on a fellow staff. Police said some miscreants early yesterday attacked Faruk Hossan, 40, manager of Agarpur Navigation and Company, at a restaurant near the terminal, leaving him critically injured. Hours after the attack, the launch owners called an emergency meeting around 12:00pm and decided not to anchor at the terminal till 2:00pm today. The launch owners alleged that some outsiders and the terminal workers, sheltered by the terminal leaseholder Alamgir Hossain, assaulted Faruk following a month-long rivalry between the owners and workers over collection of launch fare. Alamgir Hossain, however, denied the allegation saying neither he nor his associates has any link with the attack. The victim might have been attacked for personal rivalry, he added. Mahbub Uddina Ahmed, Bir Bikram, chairman of Bangladesh Inland Waterways (passenger carrier's) Association, told The Daily Star that they did not go on strike because of the November 30 hartal. Sadarghat Port Officer Afzal Hossain said no launch was anchored in the terminal yesterday. Bangladesh Inland Waterways (passenger carrier's) Association leaders will hold a talk with the DMP commissioner on the situation of the launch terminal to tighten security there. Faruk was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
