Awami League activists allegedly ransacked and set fire to the BNP office at Gokunda union in Lalmonirhat sadar upazila in the wee hours of yesterday. Four men received burn injuries in the incident. Two of the injured are under treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital and two others at a sadar upazila hospital. Fire fighters and locals subdued the fire hours later. Police said some pieces of office equipment including chairs, tables, and file cabinets were gutted in fire set by a gang of 'unidentified miscreants'. BNP activists and locals claimed the injured four are members of Gokunda union Awami League. Of them, Anis Miah, 40, is AL secretary of ward no. 4 and the rest three are executive members of Gokunda union AL, they said. Lalmonirhat District BNP President Asadul Habib Dulu alleged some 15 to 20 identified AL cadres attacked the office at midnight to loot. Motiar Rahman, the district AL secretary, denied the allegation. He said the injured four do not belong to AL; rather they have link to BNP. AL is not responsible for the arson and damage, he claimed adding that the incident resulted from the rivalry within BNP. Additional police were sent to Mostofi village to check any further unwanted incident, said Moynul Islam, officer-in-charge of the sadar thana police. Police are trying to trace the reason behind the incident and identity miscreants who set the fire, he added.
