'Moner Manush' wins Golden Peacock award

India-Bangladesh production "Moner Manush," directed by Gautam Ghosh, yesterday won the top award Golden Peacock at the 41st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2010. The film, which has Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee in the role of mystic poet Lalon Fakir, won the golden trophy and Rs 20 lakh each for the director and the producer. Moner Manush also features in it Bangladeshi actors Raisul Islam Asad, Syed Hasan Imam and Champa among others. Another Indian film, Kaushik Ganguly's "Just Another Love Story," about a woman trapped in a man's body, shared the special jury award, the Silver Peacock and Rs 15 lakh, with "The Boy," a period drama from New Zealand. Acclaimed Indian director Rituparno Ghosh appears in Ganguly's film as an actor. "The Crossing from Turkey" was adjudged the second best film at the 10-day film festival, which concluded in Panaji in the evening. The movie's lead actor Guven Kirac won the Best Actor trophy for his "closely observed and finely detailed portrayal" in the film, which revolves around a man whose ordinary life hides a great tragedy. The Best Director award went to Danish film director Susanne Bier for her film 'In A Better World', which tells the story of two families living in a provincial town and a friendship that transforms into a dangerous alliance. The Best Actress trophy, introduced this year, went to Magdalena Boczarska for her portrayal of a femme fatale who falls in love with the man she sets out to trap in the Polish film 'Little Rose' set in the Communist regime. The awards for Best Actor and Best Actress carry Rs 10 lakh and a citation.
