Call for social movement to ban tobacco farming

Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa) General Secretary Dr Abdul Matin yesterday said nationwide social movement is necessary to ban tobacco cultivation in the country. He said tobacco farming severely affects public health, environment, and economy as well as posing threat to food security. An anti-tobacco movement can prevent the crises, he added. Dr Matin was addressing the inaugural session of a banner displaying programme and online campaign organised by Nirapad Development Foundation (NDF) at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University, said a press release. NDF Chairman Ibnul Syeed Rana, Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance (BATA) Office Secretary Syed Mahbubul Alam, Initiative for Peace (IFP) Executive Arifur Rahman, and Campaign For Development (CFD) Chairman Mashiur Rahman Rubel, among others, were present at the function. The speakers demanded ban of all activities encouraging tobacco farming.
