National Human Rights Commission Chairman Professor Mizanur Rahman at a seminar yesterday urged all to come forward to protect human rights saying that it is not the duty of only one organisation or institution to protect human rights. Bangladesh Poets Club organised the seminar titled “The past and present perspective of violation of human rights” at the National Press Club in the city. Mizanur said there are enough resources in the country and if it is possible to distribute the resources properly, the human rights situation will be improved. He said the Human Rights Commission was formed during the last caretaker government but the present law has given huge power to the commission to stay beside the people. He mentioned that an orphan of an orphanage gets only Tk 1.38 for breakfast everyday. Pointing out the huge amount of money looted from the government exchequer and laundered abroad, Mizanur said if the money is not looted or laundered, the allocation for the orphans would be increased. "Do you want to see those persons who are involved in money laundering and corruption in state power and politics," asked the commission chairman to the participants at the seminar. Stressing the need for reducing poverty, former information secretary Syed Marghub Morshed said upholding human rights is not possible without reducing poverty. He said creating awareness among the people, ensuring education for all, and rule of law and reduction of poverty as well as social justice are necessary for upholding human rights. Mokarram Hossain Darodi, Chowdhury Mohammad Ishak, Abdul Khaleq and Mirza Ashraful Islam, among others, spoke at the seminar with Mostafizur Rahman in the chair.
