Conduct more research to ensure food security

President urges agri scientists

President Zillur Rahman yesterday urged the agriculture scientists to conduct more research for overall development of the agriculture sector to ensure food security for the huge populace. “New agricultural inventions need to be reached to the doorsteps of the farmers for ensuring maximum food production,” he said, while a 13-member delegation of the senate of Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) in Mymensingh, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M A Sattar Mondol, called on him at Bangabhaban in the city. The president said Bangladesh is an agro-based country and development of agriculture is important for the socioeconomic advancement of the countrymen. He lauded the role of BAU in the overall development process of the country's agriculture sector. He hoped that the scientists of the university would make more contribution to development of agriculture in the days to come. The delegation members invited Zillur to preside over the 6th convocation of the university as the chancellor in the first week of March next year. They told the president that during the convocation, the university would confer bachelor degrees to 5,949 students, master to 7,000 and PhD to 252. They sought the president's cooperation in building a new female residential hall in the university. Of the nine students' halls, only two are for the female students but currently half of its total 4,835 students are women, they said. The president gave his consent to preside over the convocation and assured the delegation of his cooperation in building another female dormitory in the university. Later, a three-member delegation of the Uttara University, Dhaka led by its Vice- Chancellor Dr M Azizur Rahman called on him at Bangabhaban. The president urged authorities of all private universities to have permanent campuses with proper infrastructure and logistics facilities for the students to ensure quality education. The delegation members assured the president of building a permanent campus for the university on their own land in the city.
