Air fighters in '71 war brought nation pride
The room sunk into a pin drop silence when Capt (rtd) Shamsul Alam Bir Uttam was narrating his air attack on the oil storage at Chittagong Port during the Liberation War on December 3, 1971.
Capt Shamsul flying a small Otter plane from Kailashahor of India hit the target a moment around 12:00am.
"There was no navigation system or map. I just did it calculating the direction and time," the war hero told a function in the city yesterday.
To recall the glorious war memories of air fighters of Bangladesh air force, Ekatturer Jatree, an organisation working on the liberation war, arranged the programme at Bengal Gallery in Dhanmondi.
The stories of the brave air fighters will remain written in golden letters in the history of Bangladesh, said Planning Minister Air Vice Marshal (rtd) AK Khandker, the chief guest.
"The planes and choppers the air fighters had used during the liberation war were highly vulnerable, but they had done successful operation with these."
"A pilot for once would not think of flying such planes in normal period, but our fighters had performed operation with these without any question," said AK Khandker, also the deputy chief of the liberation war.
The performance of air fighters during the liberation war of Bangladesh is a pride for the nation, he added.
Another captain of air force during the war, Alamgir Sattar Bir Pratik, also shared his memories of war at the function presided over by Harun Habib, freedom fighter and president of Ekatturer Jatree.
