1pc GDP loss a year for climate change

Bangladesh on Wednesday highlighted the areas of its vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events to world media, revealing the fact that the country suffers from loss of at least one percent GDP due to climate hazards. Since mid 90s, Bangladesh is responding to climate change concerns mainly with resilience power of the people and limited resources. In next two years US $ 500 million will be required to implement immediate actions and estimated US $ 10 billion in next five years. An event was organised by Bangladesh on the sidelines of the 16th Conference of Parties (COP-16) here. Member of Bangladesh negotiating team and Vice Chancellor of Brac University Prof Ainnun Nishat presented a keynote paper titled “Climate change vulnerability in Bangladesh: National response and global responsibility”. Head of Climate and Environment Department of British Development Agency DFID Mathew Wyatt and team leader of Global Climate Change of USAID and Gambia Fatou Ndeye Gaye attended the function as panel discussants. Bangladesh's State Minister for Environment and Forests Dr Hasan Mahmud said every accepted finding show that Bangladesh is losing more than one percent GDP every year due to climate change. Chair of All Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change Saber Hossain Chowdhury and National Climate Change Negotiation Working Group Convener Prof QK Ahmed also focused on the vulnerability of Bangladesh to climate change. Secretary of the environment ministry Dr Mihir Kanti Majumder acted as moderator while parliament members arriving to attend COP 16 were present. Hasan said despite priority on food security, health, shelter and education, Bangladesh need to put emphasis on climate change for its development plan due to frequent and extreme natural disasters.
