A recent survey report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), which ranked the police administration as the most corrupt institution in the country, was “ill-intentioned”, said Home Minister Sahara Khatun yesterday. During such a crucial time with the ongoing war crimes trial and World Cup Cricket coming up, police are playing an important role in ensuring law and order, she said while speaking at the inauguration of Police Blood Bank at Central Police Hospital in the city's Rajarbagh. The report was prepared with an aim to undermine the law enforcers and create instability in the country, she added. TIB on Thursday revealed its public opinion survey report which ranked police as the most corrupt institution in the country. Sahara said it was not proper to term an opinion of only 1,049 people “public opinion” in a country of 16 crore people. Deputy Inspector General (Finance) of Police Headquarters Mainur Rahman Chowdhury, who was also present, termed the survey report 'baseless' demanding immediate apology from the institution concerned. Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhul Huq in his speech said police department should recruit doctors and nurses in the department instead of depending on the health ministry. “The doctors, who are posted in ill-equipped police hospitals, lose their motivation,” he said, adding, “These hospitals should be better equipped to provide basic treatments as police personnel are at risk of sustaining frequent injuries”. Currently, thirteen units are functioning in the hospital and four more units including an Intensive Care Unit and a Cardiac Unit will be introduced soon. Police Blood Bank will create a database filing blood groups of police personnel so that blood can be provided during emergencies. It will also conduct blood transfusion services across the country and form a blood donor club. The donors will get blood without processing fees during the time of need. The family members of donors like parents, spouse and children will be entitled to receive blood after paying a processing fee, a facility the donor will enjoy throughout his lifetime. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed presided over the programme while Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker was also present.
