BDR Mutiny
5 give depositions
A witness of BDR mutiny during cross-examination yesterday said one of the 111 accused of Record Wing went to his house after one hour of the eruption of the mutiny to kill Maj Ishtiaque who took shelter at the witness's house.
Choked with emotion, sepoy assistant Muhammad Ujjal Mia said the accused Sohel Rana who was his mate came to his house at the third floor of Gomoti Building of 13 Rifle battalion with arms and asked him in indecent language to hand over Ishtiaque to him (Rana).
Besides Ujjal, another four witnesses gave depositions against 26 accused of Record Wings of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters at Special Court- 9 yesterday. The court was headed by BDR Sector Commander of Dhaka, Col Habibul Karim.
Ujjal described how the accused behaved with him on the day. "Why do you want to save army? You will remain always foolish. You did not get promoted due to army officer", said Ujjal, adding that he managed to pacify the mutineer who stayed at his house for about 23 hours.
Defying the allegation, Rana said he too went there to take shelter and did not intend to kill the major. "Can you deny that I took meals with others at your house", he asked the witness who agreed in response.
A total of 27 witnesses out of 46, so far, gave depositions as well as were cross-examined by the accused.
The allegations brought against the accused include leaving Darbar Hall, showing solidarity with the mutineers, mutinying with firearms, staying inactive to prevent the mutiny, and failing to control unruly subordinates.
The court adjourned the hearing till 10:00am, December 18. The next proceedings against the accused of Record Wing will be held at 13 Rifle Battalion.
